Helen M. Davis School was over for the year and the young sisters wanted to earn some extra money. When they had lived in Harrisburg, they had sold lemonade, but rather than earn money, their payment was in smiles. Now, they wanted to run another stand, but 10-year-old Andrea and 8- year- old Nora Christiansen wanted to do more than sell a beverage. After doing some brainstorming, it was decided that they would try their luck with flowers. They had several rose bushes growing on the property where they had just moved on Love Lake Road in Junction City, as well as gladiolas and dahlias, and friends were able to provide other flowers such as hydrangeas, lavender, and baby’s breath, to round things out. So, Sisters Flower Stand was born, and it’s done remarkably well in a short period of time. Mom Stacy assists with the sales and while they don’t have regular hours, but instead operate when flowers are available, the stand, which the girls’ dad built using a jogging stroller as it’s base so it would be easy to maneuver and would not have to be left at the end of the driveway, is brought out and work begins. Most customers come to the stand after seeing it on the family’s Facebook page, but this is only a portion of the business. These two young entrepreneurs have also landed business deals with such places as Discount Windows, Territorial Farm Stay, and Wild One’s Youth Ranch. With plans to expand next year, Andrea states that she would like their business to become akin to The Flower Gallery. She hopes to use the money earned from this year’s sales to take a trip to Sun River. Both girls are homeschooled and share an affinity for cats. Andrea plays the keyboard, guitar, and ukulele while Nora plays the drums. The 120-acre farm they call home sports a large filbert orchard that belongs to the owner of the land and several outbuildings, one of which is used to keep the flowers fresh and arrange them in colorful displays before taking them out to the stand to sell. A garden plot boasts squash and pumpkin vines and green beans the girls have helped to grow, and they eagerly anticipate planting more dahlias, gladiolas, and lilies that mom Stacy has ordered once the time of year is right. They are enterprising, these two, and their enthusiasm is infectious. They know the value of a dollar and they aren’t afraid to work hard to earn their money. They are also friendly and courteous and have a spirit of generosity. It’s a refreshing thing to see kids wanting to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty rather than vegetate in front of a screen. With traits like these, the Christiansen sisters should go far in life. Next time you need flowers, and you happen to be in Junction City, feel free to stop by the Sisters Flower Stand. You’ll be warmly welcomed, and you’ll be presented with a beautiful display to take home and enjoy. In the process, you’ll be helping to teach two little girls about free enterprise and instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment as they make yet another sale. Sisters Flower Stand.
